Murud Janjira Fort
The unconquered fort, on an island off the coastal town of Murud in Raigad District of Maharashtra. The Murud Janjira Fort, as popularly known, was never conquered by any rivalry faction ever. Probably built by Abyssinian Siddis, they ruled and controlled the fort much through its history till 1947 and resisted repeated attempts by Portuguese, Marathas and the British to wrest it. The origin of the name is from 'jazira' meaning island and 'murud' (meaning 'habsan'in Marathi aka Habshis or Abyssinians).
